Buc-ee’s is Coming to Mebane: What It Means for the Community
The buzz around Buc-ee’s arrival in Mebane, North Carolina, is palpable. As the Texas-based travel center prepares to open its doors at Exit 152 off Interstate 85/40, this development has sparked excitement, curiosity, and even some concern. While the opening is still a few years away, here’s what you need to know about this game-changing addition to Alamance County.
A New Landmark in the Making
Buc-ee’s will be located at 1425 Trollingwood-Hawfields Road, on a site previously marked by rural tranquility. With Mebane’s population growing by 14.5% since 2020, this travel center symbolizes the city’s transformation into a regional destination. While the eastern and southern parts of Mebane have seen most of the city’s recent growth, the western edge is now poised to join the surge.
Once complete, Buc-ee’s will occupy 32 acres and feature a 74,000-square-foot store — slightly smaller than the local Walmart Supercenter. The site will include 120 gas pumps, over 650 parking spaces, and 24 EV charging stations, with room for expansion. Visitors can expect a wide range of products, including Buc-ee’s signature snacks like Beaver Nuggets, freshly smoked brisket, and a massive jerky wall. Additionally, local goods and interactive kiosks will promote other attractions in Mebane.
When Will Buc-ee’s Open?
Patience is key, as the grand opening is slated for late 2026 or early 2027. Until then, fans of the travel center can visit other locations in Florence, South Carolina, or Sevierville, Tennessee. A new store in Mount Crawford, Virginia, is also set to open next summer.
What Jobs Will Buc-ee’s Bring?
The new Buc-ee’s will create approximately 225 full-time positions, offering competitive wages and robust benefits:
-
Starting Pay: $18/hour for cashiers and attendants, $21/hour for food service workers, and $25/hour for management roles.
-
Benefits: Full-time employees will receive health insurance, a 401(k) plan, and three weeks of paid vacation.
These roles will attract a diverse workforce and could spark further economic growth in the area.
Transforming Mebane’s Western Edge
Buc-ee’s presence is already drawing developers to the region. On December 3, the city council approved a large mixed-use project nearby, which will bring:
-
Nearly 300,000 square feet of retail and dining spaces
-
Four standalone outparcel sites
-
A medical and office campus
-
683 residential units, including apartments and townhomes
Duke Health is also building a medical office close to the site, while a hotel and retail project is underway near Lowe’s on N.C. 119. These developments are set to make Mebane’s western corridor a vibrant hub of activity.
Addressing Traffic Concerns
One of the biggest challenges will be managing the increased traffic. A study estimates Buc-ee’s will add 1,000 to 1,500 weekday trips during peak hours and nearly 2,300 trips during Saturday peaks. To accommodate this, a $38.7 million road improvement project will expand the bridge over I-40/85 and add travel lanes. Buc-ee’s will contribute $10 million toward these upgrades, ensuring smoother traffic flow in the area. Construction is expected to begin this spring and last about two years.
Mixed Reactions from the Community
While many are thrilled about the economic opportunities and unique offerings Buc-ee’s will bring, not everyone is on board. A petition opposing the project has gathered over 1,600 signatures, with concerns ranging from increased noise and light pollution to environmental impacts on Back Creek, which feeds into the Haw River. Water usage and stormwater runoff are additional worries for some residents.
Despite these concerns, Buc-ee’s has a loyal following. Fans rave about its spotless bathrooms, extensive snack selection, and friendly atmosphere, often driving hours just to visit. For Mebane, the challenge will be balancing the excitement and benefits of this development with the need to address community concerns responsibly.
The Road Ahead
Buc-ee’s arrival represents a significant milestone for Mebane, reshaping not just the city’s landscape but also its identity. As the travel center draws visitors from near and far, it will also serve as a catalyst for further development and economic growth. However, the city must navigate these changes carefully, ensuring that progress doesn’t come at the expense of its charm and environmental sustainability.
As construction begins and anticipation builds, one thing is clear: Buc-ee’s is more than just a travel center — it’s a symbol of Mebane’s evolution into a thriving, modern community.
